I. Elaborate on: (2X15=30)
1. Mr. Shanmugam aged 46 years is admitted with a diagnosis of Diabetic keto acidosis.
a) Define Diabetic keto acidosis.
b) Discuss the pathophysiology and the clinical manifestations of Diabetic keto acidosis.
c) Explain the management of Diabetic keto acidosis for the first 48 hours.

2. Mrs. Geetha, 48 years old is admitted with hyperthyroidism for surgical management.
a) Define Thyrotoxicosis.
b) List the clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism.
c) Explain the pre & post operative management including the prevention of complications.

II. Write Notes on : (5X 5 = 25)
1. Colostomy care
2. Renal calculi

4. Rehabilitation of patient after below knee amputation
5. Lumbar puncture

III. Short Answer Questions: (10X 2 = 20)

Cyanotic defects are defects in which blood pumped to the body contains less-than-normal amounts of oxygen, resulting in a condition called cyanosis. It causes a blue discoloration of the skin. Infants with cyanosis are often called "blue babies."
  1. Tetralogy of Fallot
  2. Transposition of Great Arteries
  3. Tricuspid Atresia
  4. Ventricular Septal Defect with reversal of shunt

Two Classical signs of tetany :-
Chvostek sign :- Percussion of the cheek in front of the external ear pinna will cause spasm of the facial muscles
Carpal spasm : can be elicited by tying the BP cuff and inflating the cuff

Typhoid is caused by Salmonella typhi. Paratyphoid fever is caused by Salmonella paratyphi
Cholera is caused by Vibrio cholerae
